hERstory & significance of the red tent

The red tent, also known as a moon lodge is traditionally a place for women to come together to bleed, pray and support each other. Our ancestors were in greater connection with the rhythms of the earth and it was common for them to bleed together, in sync with the cycles of the new moon. Women would honour this sacred moontime and access their power and intuition which is heightened at the time of menstruation and the dark of the moon.

Red tents were sacred spaces symbolic of the womb and found cross-culturally. Entering into the red tent is like entering into the womb. Hearing the drum beating is like hearing the heartbeat of the earth; of the great mother, returning to where we came from. Entering the energetics of the wombspace can bring altered states of consciousness, and allow women to dream, rest and receive insight from the spiritual realms. It was believed that the information received while women bled benefitted the whole community. The time of bleeding is a time of great power, sacredness and insight and the red tent was a safe haven of solace, great rest and comfort. A place of being and not doing. Women would bleed into the earth with prayers and emerge out of the red tent; out of the womb with greater ability to support their community through sacred purpose and with a renewed sense of self.

The emergence of the red tent is rising as women honour their sacred moontime and realize the power it holds; as we rise into our divinity. As we deeply honour ourselves, each other, the earth and the moon. The modern-day red tent is a space for women of all ages to gather (whether in their bleeding time or not) to share and learn about ancient feminine wisdom and the blood mysteries. When women come together to witness and support one another, their prayers and intentions for themselves and the collective are amplified.

rite of passage

red tent ceremony

a rite of passage is crossing the threshold into a new and profound chapter of our soul’s journey; a transitional moment in one’s life. cross-culturally, girls would enter into womanhood with ritual. modern society has created shame & fear around our menstrual cycles when our blood is truly sacred and immensely powerful. most of us have been denied a recognition, celebration or honouring of our first bleed when we crossed the threshold into womanhood.

we offer rite of passage ceremonies within the red tent to honour and celebrate girls entering womanhood; the beginning of their bleeding years as well as ceremonies for women well into their bleeding years to celebrate their moontime in a sacred rite of passage that was denied to them. this ceremony establishes a powerful re-linking & activation of the womb-heart-mind connection. this deeply sacred & potent ceremony is held for an individual (1:1 or amongst your loved ones to witness and support you) or offered to a collective group.
